Supporting the home education community through creativity, culture and connection

Our Home Education Pilot Programme launched this April, offering creative, flexible learning opportunities for home‑educated children and young people. This programme is developed in close consultation with home‑educating parents, the programme responds directly to the needs, interests and values of the home education community.

The programme includes inspiring masterclasses, immersive drama workshop experience days, and engaging tours, giving young people the chance to explore creativity, build confidence, and learn alongside others in a supportive, inclusive environment.

Sessions are led by professional artists and educators.

FAQs

Who are these sessions for?

Our Home Education sessions are designed for home‑educated young people within the age range stated on each event. Activities are tailored to be age‑appropriate, creative and engaging, with a focus on participation rather than performance level.

Do children need previous drama or theatre experience?

No. No prior experience is needed. Our sessions are designed to be accessible and welcoming for beginners, with clear guidance and supportive facilitation throughout.

Are these SEND-specific sessions?

These sessions are not specialist SEND provision. However, we recognise that many home‑educated young people have a range of learning styles, sensory needs or access requirements.

Our practitioners are experienced in working inclusively and will adapt activities where possible. We encourage parents and carers to contact us in advance to discuss whether a session is likely to be a good fit for their child.

Is this session right for my child?

This session may work well for young people who:

  • Are happy working in a small group
  • Enjoy creative, practical activities
  • Can manage a drop‑off session with support from staff

If your child requires 1:1 support, a highly specialist environment, or specific interventions, please get in touch so we can discuss this honestly with you.

Are sessions drop off or do parents need to stay?

This varies by event. Each listing will clearly state whether the session is drop‑off or requires a parent or carer to remain on site.

For drop‑off sessions, young people will be fully supervised by DBS‑checked Norwich Theatre staff for the duration of the activity.

What is the group size?

Group sizes vary depending on the session, normally maximum of 15. We aim to keep groups at a comfortable, manageable size to support inclusion and positive group dynamics.

What should my child bring?

Details will be included in your booking information, but generally young people should bring:

  • Comfortable clothes they can move in
  • A packed lunch (if stated)
  • Any essential personal items they may need during the day

If your child has specific requirements, please let us know in advance.

How accessible is the venue?

We aim to make our spaces as accessible as possible. If you have questions about physical access, sensory considerations, quiet spaces, or arrival/departure, please contact us and we’ll be happy to discuss.

What if my child feels unsure or anxious?

It’s very common for some young people to feel nervous at first. Our practitioners create a friendly, supportive atmosphere and offer encouragement without pressure. Participation is always managed sensitively, and children are never forced to perform.

What if we can no longer attend after booking?

These sessions are funded projects offering low‑ or no‑cost opportunities, and places are often in high demand. If you need to cancel, please contact us as soon as possible so we can offer the space to another family.

How do I hear about future Home Education sessions?

You can sign up to our mailing list or keep an eye on our Home Education webpage for new workshops, tours and performance opportunities, including upcoming Autumn dates.

Should I contact you before booking?

If you’re unsure whether a session is right for your child, we strongly encourage you to get in touch before booking. We’re happy to talk through the session structure, group size and environment to help you make an informed decision.
